DURHAM, N.C. - Juniors Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.), Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia) and Molly Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) scored one goal each and sophomore Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) added two assists to lead No. 3 Maryland to a 3-1 victory over No. 12 Duke in field hockey at Williams Field here Wednesday night.
Maryland improved to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference while Duke falls to 7-4 overall and 0-2 in the ACC. The Terps have now won eight straight while the loss snapped a five-game wining streak for the Blue Devils.
Maryland built a 2-0 cushion on goals by Smith and Hiskins with both goals assisted by Caroline Walter.
Duke countered with a penalty corner goal with no time remaining in the first half by senior Corey Ceccolini (Branford, Conn.) off assists by junior Courtney Sommer (Tulsa, Okla.) and senior Anne Stanislawczyk (Shillington, Pa.).
Maryland sealed the victory with 10:02 remaining in the game on an unassisted goal Kauffman. .
Maryland returns home to host eighth-ranked Virginia in ACC action at 1 pm on Saturday. Duke returns to action on Sunday when it hosts second-ranked North Carolina at 1 pm.
