No. 2 Maryland Scores 4-1 Field Hockey Victory Over Rutgers

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior All-American Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) scored three goals and Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) scored one goal and added two assists to lead No. 2 Maryland to a 4-1 victory over Rutgers in field hockey at the Artificial Turf Facility here Saturday. The win was the Terps' 11th consecutive which is tied for the second longest winning streak in school history. Maryland has not lost since Sept. 6.

Maryland improved to 13-1 with the victory while Rutgers fell to 6-6. The Terps are ranked No. 2 in the latest poll by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.

Tagliente scored three goals - all in the second half - to lead Maryland to the victory. Her first goal came on the penalty stroke with 27:02 remaining in the game. Her second goal came with 23:17 remaining and her third with 2:50 remaining. It was Tagliente's second hat trick in two games and her third of the season.

Smith scored Maryland's third goal of the day while assisting Tagliente twice. Smith's goal gave the Terps a 3-1 lead with 8:03 remaining in the game. She recorded assists on goals two and four. Smith has now been credited with a career-high 12 assists this season.

The Terps outshot the Scarlet Knights, 33-7. Maryland's goalie Ashley Hohnstine (Oakton, Va.) recorded three saves while Rutgers' goalie Abby Joseph recorded a career-high 23 stops. Maryland also held a 22-5 advantage in penalty corners.

Maryland plays host to Radford at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
