Third-Ranked Maryland Downs No. 6 Michigan State, 4-1

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 3 ranked Maryland field hockey team improved its record to 6-1 Monday after defeating No. 6 Michigan State, 4-1. Both teams traveled to Ohio State University and observed a moment of silence before the game began in the wake of the recent national tragedy. The Terps wore patriotic ribbons and black armbands as well.

Maryland jumped out to an early lead, scoring the only goal of the first half. Junior forward Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) netted the first score off an assist from senior back Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) at the 24:17 mark.

The Terps came alive in the second half, scoring three goals in less than 12 minutes. Junior forward Angie Klingerman (Bloomsburg, Pa.) scored the game-winner with 21:35 remaining in the half. Freshman Colleen Barbieri (Centereach, N.Y.) added a goal for the Terps off an assist from senior midfielder Rachel Hiskins (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) at 15:45. Senior forward Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) rounded out the Terps' offensive attack at the 10:03 mark, scoring off an assist from Autumn Welsh, her second of the game. In the net, senior goalie Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) recorded five saves. Maryland outshot Michigan State, 15-8.

The Spartans' senior forward Maureen Halstead netted Michigan State's lone goal with 4:36 to play in the game. The Spartans dropped to 4-3 with the loss.

The Terps face their first ACC opponent Saturday, September 22 at 1 p.m. when they host Wake Forest at the Artificial Turf Facility in College Park, Md.
