Terps Top Terriers in Day One at USF

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Maryland softball team gritted out a seventh-inning 3-2 win over Boston University and fell to Oklahoma State, 1-0, Friday in its first two games at USF's Under Armour Invitational.

In game one, the Terrapins (9-15) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third when Lindsey Schmeiser doubled to left with the bases loaded and two outs. Mandy Gardner led off with a base hit, then Amanda McCann singled and Sara Acosta drew a walk.

Starting pitcher Kaitlyn Schmeiser held the Terriers (6-11) scoreless through five innings. Boston University's Megan Volpano reached on an error to start the top of the sixth, then Brittany Clendenny scored her on a base hit. Lauren Hynes hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

Freshman Brenna Nation came on to pitch in the top of the seventh and held the Terriers without a hit or run.

Freshman Corey Schwartz reached on a fielder's choice in the seventh. McCann got on with another fielder's choice and Schwartz was able to take second on the play. Bridget Hawvermale came on to pinch run for Schwartz. Acosta grounded out, but advanced Hawvermale and McCann to second and third. With two outs and Lindsey Schmeiser up, Hawvermale scored on a passed ball to win the game.

Against the Cowgirls (16-12), freshman starting pitcher Maddie Martin allowed one unearned run in 6.0 innings off three hits. She picked up seven strikeouts on the day.

The Cowgirls got a runner on with a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first. Tamara Brown stole second, than advanced to third on an infield hit and scored the only run of the game on a passed ball.

The Cowgirls threatened in the bottom of the third with the bases loaded, but Martin was able to get Amy Graham down on strikes to end the inning.

The Terrapins had runners on in the top of the first, third, fourth and fifth innings, but were unable to capitalize.

The Terrapins will play Temple at 11 a.m. and Valparaiso at 4 p.m. Saturday, then Dartmouth at 11:45 a.m. Sunday.

After this weekend's games, the Terrapins will return home to open ACC play vs. Virginia (9-10, 1-2 ACC) next weekend. The Terps and the Cavaliers will play a doubleheader on March 23 at 1 p.m. and a single game at 1 p.m. on March 24. Admission is free.
