No. 3 Maryland Defeats No. 8 Virginia, 3-2, In Field Hockey

COLLEGE, PARK, Md. - No. 3 Maryland scored three first half goals and held off a late Virginia rally to gain a 3-2 win in college field hockey at the Artificial Turf Facility here Saturday. The No. 8 ranked Cavaliers held the Terps scoreless in the second half and misfired on a penalty corner with no time remaining as Maryland won its ninth consecutive game.

Maryland improves to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference while Virginia falls to 7-3 and 0-2 in the ACC. The Terps are ranked No. 3 and the Cavaliers No. 8 in this week's National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll.

Freshman Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) and juniors Molly Kauffman (East Lawn, Pa.) and Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia) scored first half goals to stake the Terps to a 3-0 lead. Junior Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) was credited with assists on Maryland's first and third goals of the day. She has now recorded a career-high 10 assists this season.

Hiskins scored what proved to be the winning goal with no time remaining in the first half. Maryland was awarded a penalty corner on a defensive foul as time expired. Hiskins took a pass from Smith and slid the ball past Virginia goalie Becky Worthington to give the Terps a 3-0 lead.

Senior Meredith Elwell scored two second half goals for the Cavaliers. Her second cut the Terps lead to 3-2 with only 9:32 remaining in the game.

Virginia was awarded a penalty corner as time expired in the second half but the shot sailed high over the crossbar to end the game.
