College Park, Md. - Indiana junior John Swann (Brownsburg, Ind.) deposited a corner kick from five yards out off a Ryan Mack (Beverly Hills, Mich.) corner kick to score the golden goal give Indiana its first win of the year, 2-1. The goal came 11:33 into the first overtime to end a hard-fought battle between No. 8 Maryland (2-1) and No. 15 Indiana (1-2) to conclude the first day of the Maryland/FILA Classic.
Terrapin freshman Bryan Vitagliano (Scottsdale, Ariz.) opened the scoring with his second career goal off a fastbreak at 75:31. Sophomore A.J. Herrera (Albuquerque, N.M.) and freshman Abe Thompson (Fairfax Station, Va.) assisted on the play.
The Hoosiers answered less then a minute later when David Prall (Bloomington, Ind.) scored after a scramble in front of the goal. The goal sent the game into overtime where play was scoreless until the corner kick at 101:33 lead to the Swann goal.
The contest was a physical one that included 46 fouls and four cards. Terp starting goalie Christian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) tallied eight saves in the loss, while Hoosier keeper T.J. Hannig (Wheeling, W.Va.) ended the victory with four saves. Indiana meets Virginia on Sunday to continue the Maryland/FILA Classic against Virginia, who lost Friday night's early game to South Carolina 2-1. The Gamecocks meet Maryland at 2:30 p.m. to end the tournament weekend at Ludwig Field.
