No. 2 UNC Field Hockey Trips No. 3 Terps, 1-0 In OT

Oct. 22, 2000

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - In a well fought out, down-to-the-wire battle typical of a Maryland-North Carolina field hockey match, the No. 2 Tar Heels (16-1, 4-0 ACC) managed to prevail in overtime, 1-0, over the No. 3 Terrapins (14-3, 2-2 ACC) on Maryland's campus. Terp junior goalie Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) made three saves in the third consecutive overtime match played between the two schools, and fifth extra-session contest in the past six meetings. Maryland had won the last three: one in strokes, one in double-overtime and one in regulation, over the Tar Heels.

The Terrapins controlled much of the play during the first half, outshooting the Tar Heels 9-4. Key UNC defensive saves on shots by juniors Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) and Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) and lunging stops by Heel keeper Amy Tran kept the Terps off the scoreboard, while a stingy Terp backfield stifled North Carolina's attack in the scoreless first period.

Both squads' defenses tightened even more in an evenly played second stanza. Hohnstine stopped a pair of Carolina shots while Tran thwarted three Terp attacks. The scoreboard read 0-0 at the end of regulation.

Thirty seconds into the ensuing overtime period and seven aside play, the Tar Heels were granted a free hit just inside the Terrapins' circle. Junior back Abby Martin used that opportunity to fire a pass in front of the Terp cage, where it was tipped just under the crossbar by a diving Kristen McCann for the golden goal.

The Terps are next in action on Sunday, Oct. 29, when they host the Richmond Spiders at the Artificial Turf Facility. The last home contest of the year will feature a pre-game senior honors ceremony and a raffle for a 2001 family four-pack of Terp football season tickets. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
