Berger Qualifies for NCAA Track Nationals

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Dominic Berger of the University of Maryland qualified for the upcoming NCAA Outdoor National Track & Field Championships with his second-place finish Saturday in the final of the men's 110-meter hurdles at the NCAA East Regional Championships.

Berger finished in 13.63 seconds to earn second place behind Jason Richardson of South Carolina, who ran 13.36. Berger's mark was a season- and career-best. He earned the second-seed in the final based on his preliminary time of 13.68 last night and finished behind Richardson also on Friday.

He earned eight points for Maryland with his finish, moving the Terrapins into a tie for 26th in the men's team standings. Florida State comfortably won the men's team title at the regional, finishing with 97 points to beat Florida with 64 and South Carolina with 51. There were 54 scoring teams in the East Regional.

On the women's side, the 14 points scored by Kierra Foster and Lynn Hernandez in Friday's long jump final put the Terrapins in a tie for 15th place out of the 52 scoring teams. South Carolina won the women's team title with 79.5 points, ahead of Miami with 71 and Georgia with 50.5.

Late Friday evening, Maryland junior Meghan Braffet finished 24th in the women's 5,000 meters, running 17:14.54. Also Friday, Toni Aluko participated in the women's high jump, but missed all three of her attempts at the opening height of 5-7.25.

Berger, Foster and Hernandez will all represent Maryland at the NCAA Outdoor Nationals, to be held June 7-10 in Sacramento, Calif.
