BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Maryland softball team opened its 2010 season Friday with games against Kentucky and Florida Atlantic in the FAU Kick-Off Classic Tournament. The Terps went 1-1 on the day behind strong performances from their senior leaders as well as pitchers Kerry Hickey and Kendra Knight.

The Terps beat tournament host Florida Atlantic 2-1 to claim their first victory of the year. After falling behind 1-0 in the second inning, sophomore starting pitcher Kendra Knight pitched eight solid innings to keep the Terrapins close in the match-up. She racked up 13 strikeouts and went 2-for-3 with stolen base attempts.

"The FAU game was a great total team effort," head coach Laura Watten said. "Kendra kept us in the game by totally controlling the FAU hitters."

In the seventh inning, senior Nadine Blackie stole home to knot the game at 1-1. In Terps nabbed the 2-1 victory in the bottom of the eighth when senior Alex Schultz drove in freshman Sara Acosta for the game-winning run.

"In the end, our bats came through and we pulled out the win in extra innings," Watten said.

Blackie hit three singles in the win, while sophomore Vangie Galindo added two herself. Junior Niki Lau and Schultz each hit a single as well.

In their first game of the day, Maryland fell to Kentucky 1-0 after a strong defensive game from both teams. The Wildcats scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim the win.

Junior Kerry Hickey threw a strong six-inning performance complete with five strikeouts to help keep the win within reach. With their defensive effort, the Terrapins were able to control much of the game, but couldn't get the production at the plate.

"Overall we had a great day from our pitchers," Watten said. "Kerry pitched a great game against a great-hitting Kentucky team. We controlled the Kentucky game, but weren't able to get the hits when we needed them."

Sophomore Michelle Takeda led the Terps with two hits, including a single in the second inning and a triple in the fifth inning, while freshman Nikki Maier and Schultz also added hits.

The Terrapins will take the field Saturday morning at 11 a.m. to face off against Pittsburgh in their third game of the FAU Kick-Off Classic. They will then take on Mississippi at 4 p.m. Live stats will be available.
