COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland softball team has signed Crystal Crews and Nikki Smith for the 2005 season. Both Crews and Smith were teammates at Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce, Fla. and members of the 2004 All-Southern Conference Team.

Crews maintained a 0.88 ERA while pitching for Indian River this season. She struck out 153 batters in 127 innings pitched and was named the Southern Conference's Pitcher of the Year. Crews also proves to be a double threat after batting .411 with six home runs and 43 RBIs this season. She began her collegiate career at Georgia Southern. The Safety Harbor, Fla., native was also selected to the All-State team during her high school career at Countryside High School.

Smith batted .336 with 10 doubles and drove in 24 runs this year at Indian River. The Orange Park, Fla., native was named to the All-State team while playing at Middleburg High School. She played for the Middleburg Flame travel team and Team Jax before entering college.

The two players are the first Florida residents to join the Terrapins since former pitcher Amanda Bettker, who graduated in 2002.
