CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -Connor Barth kicked three field goals and T.J. Yates threw a touchdown pass to Hakeem Nicks helping North Carolina to a 16-13 victory over Maryland on Saturday.

Freshman tailback Johnny White added a career-high 92 rushing yards for the Tar Heels (3-6, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Hicks, the team's leading receiver, finished with eight catches for 88 yards. Yet, it was the defense that set the tone early for North Carolina. Little went right during an ugly opening quarter for the Terrapins (4-5, 1-4 ACC), who lost for the first time in five games in the series. Maryland managed only 3 yards on nine plays, quarterback Chris Turner was sacked once and leading rusher Keon Lattimore was held to a single yard.

And the least penalized team in the ACC was flagged twice, nearly half its season average.

Still, Maryland had a chance down the stretch. One final drive started on its own 23-yard line with 2:49 left, and Turner completed four consecutive passes to move the Terps to North Carolina's 41. But on fourth-and-2, he was pressured by defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer and threw high toward the sideline, ending the drive with only 36 seconds remaining.

Barth connected from 23 yards to break the scoreless tie in the second quarter. Maryland's Obi Egekeze tied with a 26-yarder with about 3 1/2 minutes remaining in the first half.

Yates completed three consecutive passes - two to Brooks Foster - to give Barth another chance from 45 yards out, and his kick broke the tie at 1:01.

After the ensuing kickoff, Turner overthrew Darrius Hayward-Bey, and safety Trimaine Goddard intecepted it. Yates worked the hurry-up offense again, and his 20-yard completion led to another 45-yard field goal for Barth.

Yates' 30-yard touchdown pass to Hicks put North Carolina ahead, but Maryland found an offensive spark to make it close.

Turner completing all three passes to move his team to the Tar Heels' 6. Lattimore finished off the march with a 6-yard scoring run, and when Egekeze made a 29-yard field goal, Maryland was within the final margin.

Heyward-Bey had a team-high five receptions for 64 yards, while Lance Ball rushed for 69 yards on 15 carries.

Turner completed 20 of 36 passes for 209 yards.
