TOWSON, Md. - Maryland freshman attacker Joe Walters (Rochester, N.Y.) scored the first four goals of his collegiate career to lift the No. 3 Terps to a 12-8 victory over No. 17 Towson at Minnegan Field at Towson Stadium on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Graduate attackman Brian Hunt (West Chester, Pa.) added his 14th career hat trick in the Terps' 11th consecutive win at Towson against the Tigers.

Walter scored his third and fourth goals of the game in a span of 26 seconds late in the fourth quarter to clinch the win, giving the Terps an 11-6 advantage with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. Hunter Lochte drew the Tigers to within four at 11-7 as he netted his third of the game with 4:07 left in the game and Brian Myers made it 11-8 with 2:57 left. The Terps defense showed its power and strength in the third quarter as it held Towson scoreless for a span of more than 17 minutes. Maryland jumped to a 9-5 lead as Moran score his second man-up goal and Dan LaMonica (Parkton, Md.) tallied his sixth career goal against Towson. LaMonica's goal was assisted by Alex Melzer (Darien, Conn.), who notched his first career point on the scoring play. Drew Pfarr ended the Tiger drought with a goal with 1:55 left in the thitd quarter.

Maryland increased its halftime lead to 7-5 outscoring the Tigers 3-2 in the second quarter. Paul Gillette (Severna Park, Md.) scored his fourth career goal and first of the season to make it 5-4 with 10:57 left in the first half. The Terps built the lead to two at 6-4 as Moran netted his first of two man-up goals in the game with just over minutes left in the half. After Lochte scored his second of the game to bring Towson back to within one, Walters scored his second of the game with 2:33 left in the first half to give the Terps to 7-5 intermission lead.

The Terps jumped out to a 3-1 lead just 4:41 into the game as Joe Walters (Rochester, N.Y.), Ian Healy (Great Falls, Va.) and Hunt scored in a span of 2:26. For Walters, the goal was the first of his career. The Tigers rallied back with two goals to tie the game as Kevin Rutledge netted a man-up goal and Lochte scored with 2:55 left in the first to make it 3-3. Hunt notched his second of the game off an assist by Ian Healy with 2:23 left in the first.

Towson goalie Reed Sothoron made a career-high 12 saves, while Maryland's Danny McCormick (McLean, Va.) made 11 saves coming off his ACC Player of the Week honor.

Maryland returns to action on Tuesday afternoon as they host Bucknell at the Artificial Turf Facility at 3 p.m.
