TAMPA, Fla. -
The University of Maryland softball team will be opening its tenth softball season Friday, Feb. 20 at the USF Best Western-All Suites Hotels Tournament in Tampa, Fla. The Terrapins will play their opening game against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (6-2) at 10:00 a.m. The teams have never met in their programs' histories, but were scheduled to play each other last season until inclement weather wiped out the game.
Maryland's second game in the weekend-long competition is against Hofstra. The Pride (1-5) return five starters from a 39-17 team that captured the 2003 Colonial Athletic Association championship. The Pride fell to the Terrapins in a March 29 battle last season, 8-1. Then-junior pitcher Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) went the distance for Maryland, striking out seven Hofstra batters.
The Terps will play their third game of the set Saturday, Feb. 21 against Temple. The Owls come into the tournament with a 1-2 record after their opening weekend at the Triangle Classic. The teams will meet for the first time since 1999. After the opening games, Maryland will enter bracket play against the four other teams in the tournament: host South Florida (10-2), Rhode Island (0-0), Pittsburgh (0-0) and NC State (1-3). Both NC State and Pittsburgh are slated to play the Terps later this season.
