CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Playing in a torrential driving rain storm at Klockner Stadium, No. 6 Virginia downed Maryland, 1-0 in ACC women's soccer action on Tuesday night.

The teams battled the horrendous elements all night as the field continued to become more and more saturated as the game progressed. Klockner had numerous puddles of standing water by midway through the second half. It marked the fourth consecutive game at Virginia between the teams which was effected by wet conditions - as it had been in 1997, 1999 and 2001.

Virginia extended its undefeated streak to 11 games and is now 11-1-2 overall, 3-0-1 in the conference. Maryland is now 7-5-1 overall, 1-3 in ACC play.

Maryland, ranked No. 19 by Soccer America, had many chances in the second half as they outshot the Cavaliers, 9-5. But the constant rain effected both teams as shots came up short and landed in pools of water.

Virginia scored the only goal as Kelly Hammond scored in the 21st minute. Hammond scored on a back kick off a cross from the right post that slipped past Kristen Barnhill and slid into the goal despite Jen Biscoe's attempt to save the ball. Lindsay Gusick and Sarah Huffman were credited with assists on the Bowie, Maryland native's 10th goal of the season.

Maryland's only shot of the half came 32 seconds after the goal as Katie Ludwig blasted a ball from 17 yards out that was stopped by Anne Abernethy to keep it 1-0.

The Terps opened the second half with heavy pressure as they registered three shots in the first six minutes. They continued to pour on the pressure taking six of the first eight shots of the half as the conditions worsen. Ali Andrzejewski had a great scoring chance with 22 minutes left in regulation but her blast came up a yard short as it landed in a huge pool of water in front of Abernethy.

The Terps continue their schedule as they head to ACC rival NC State this Sunday, Oct. 19 for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Method Road.
