COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland won its ninth consecutive home opener with a 2-1 victory over regional rival Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday afternoon.
Junior forward Katie Ludwig (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) scored the decisive goal for the Terps as she converted a give and go off a pass from senior Kim King (Media, Pa.) in the 68th minute to give Maryland the two-goal cushion.
Junior midfielder Audra Poulin (Silver Spring, Md.) scored the first goal as she bended the ball on a free kick over a four-person wall in the 54th minute.
VCU got within one in the 80th minute as Solveig Haaland connected on a feed from Hedda Gardsjord.
Maryland moves to 3-1 overall and VCU suffered their first defeat to fall to 3-1.
Freshman goalkeeper Mariel Wilner (Owings Mills, Md) recorded her third win of the season by making three saves.
Maryland has won 11 of 16 home openers in its history.
Maryland returns to action on Friday night as they host the 2002 Maryland/FILA Classic when they take on local foe Loyola at 7:30 p.m. That game will follow the tournament opening match pitting Hartford versus Notre Dame at 5 p.m.
