Statesboro, Ga. - Maryland softball had two straight wins today over Troy State and Charleston Southern to advance as the No. 2 seed in the Georgia Southern Invitational. The Terps (3-1) overcame Troy in eight innings for a 1-0 victory, then had a come-from-behind 5-2 victory against Georgia Southern.

The Saturday afternoon games were cancelled due to rain. The Terrapins will play Troy State tomorrow at 10 a.m., with the tournament final being played at Noon against No. 1 seed Louisville.

Game One

Four Maryland players had hits in the first matchup against Troy State, yet it took eight innings for the Terrapins to score the game-winning RBI. Right fielder Jenny Belak had the team-high of 3-for-3 hits in the game.

Sophomore Keri Lounge nailed a single to right field in the second inning and Belak followed suit with a hit to right center in the third inning, but tough defensive play by the Trojans prevented the Terrapins from converting the score.

Troy had its first hit in the second inning when Jessica Lyle grounded to first with one out. Maryland freshman Meredith Nelles, who started on the mound, struck out the next two hitters to end the inning.

In the fourth inning on a 3-2 pitch, catcher Nikki Smith fired a single down the middle and freshman Devon Williams came in for Smith as a pinch runner. Lounge hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Williams, but Williams was halted when trying to steal third when Troy State's catcher Felicia Hammer threw to third base for the out.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Terrapins came close when left fielder Meghan Booth singled to left field, but fell short after right fielder Natalie Grossman grounded out putting the game in extra innings.

At the top of the eighth, with Troy's Brooke Powell at third, the Terps prevented a suicide squeeze when Lindsey Ubrun and Smith made the key out. When Coach Watten put Grossman up at second, she moved to third after Belak hit a sacrifice bunt to go out at first. Troy then intentionally walked Klein and Smith which brought up Lounge. At 1-2, Lounge ripped a drive to right center which brought in Grossman for the winning run and a 1-0 victory for the Terps.

The Terps concluded the game with seven hits and eight strike outs. Both Meredith Nelles and Crystal Crews pitched four innings in the game, while Nelles gets the win to go 1-1. Troy State drops to 5-2.

Game Two

The Terrapins strong hitting and pitching in the second game proved to be the difference in the matchup against host Georgia Southern. Eight Terrapins had hits in the game, including freshman Lindsey Ubrun's first home run of her career, while senior Crews fanned 16 batters as freshman Nelles struck out 5-of-6 batters she faced.

The Terps fell behind quickly in the second inning after Georgia Southern's Heather Smith hit a double with one out. She notched the first run after Katie Smith singled and Maryland had an error.

Belak, Lounge, Abbey Welch and Klein had hits early in the game, with a double down the middle by Smith that scored Klein and Welch in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead.

Georgia Southern's Sam Steiner evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth, but was shortly followed by Maryland freshman Ubrun who blasted her first career home run to left field to go up 3-2 in the fifth inning.

At the top of the sixth inning, Lounge hit her third career triple to right center. Greyson singled to right, scoring Lounge. Booth hit a single to left field on a 3-2 pitch bringing Greyson to third. Welch was intentionally walked. Belak singled to third which brought Greyson home for the 5-2 score which held through the end of the game.

Nelles came in to face the second batter of the sixth inning. She fanned all three batters to close out the seventh inning. Crews takes the win for 2-1 as the Terps improved to 3-1.
