Sept. 15, 2002

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 1 Maryland Terrapins (6-0, 0-0 ACC) outlasted a defensive-minded Boston University squad (3-3, 0-0 AMERICA EAST), 1-0 in overtime, to capture the 2002 Terrapin Field Hockey Invitational title. Sophomore forward Colleen Barbieri (Centereach, N.Y.) closed out a persistent Maryland effort in the first minute of the first overtime, finishing a forward pass from senior Izzy Palmer (Malvern, England) with a chip shot into the right side of the cage. The Terrapins have won all six Terrapin Invitationals since the event's inception in 1996.

Boston did everything possible to make it difficult for the Terps to score, playing five and six defenders in Maryland's shooting circle for the majority of regulation. Maryland managed to put together a 19-0 shot advantage, and had one apparent goal whistled off in each half, but did not net the game-winner until overtime. Goalkeeper Kerry Hearsey (Leicester, England) and the Terp defense registered their fourth straight shutout, allowing their opposition zero shots and penalty corners for the first time since the Terps' 6-0 downing of Drexel on Oct. 28 of last season.

In the consolation game, American opened the Capital Beltway's day two sweep, downing UMass 2-0. The game was evenly played until Eagle junior Melissa Snyder scored on a slapshot in the 50th minute and three-time regional All-American Magdalena Aguilar rifled in a score of her own with only 36 seconds remaining in the game.

The top-ranked Terrapins hit the road for the first of a four-game away trip at Delaware on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Maryland continues to play road matches at No. 7 Wake Forest and Virginia Commonwealth (RV) on Saturday and Sunday.
