TOWSON, Md.- - The third-ranked Maryland Terrapins men's lacrosse team got a 9-7 victory over 20th-ranked Towson on Saturday off the strength of four goals from senior Andrew Combs (Baltimore, Md.), son of Towson football coach Gordy Combs, and another two goals late in the game from sophomore Jamie Daue (Lutherville, Md.).
The Terps came out hot, with three goals in the first quarter, including two from Combs and a goal from junior midfielder Mike LaMonica (Parkton, Md.). Combs ended the half, scoring his second of four goals on the day on a breakaway when the Terps' man-down unit caused a Towson turnover. Maryland's man-down unit continued it's stellar performance this year, killing six of seven penalty situations they faced. In a solid, six-save first quarter, Maryland goalie Pat McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md.) held the Tigers scoreless making several spectacular saves.
Towson settled its offense in the second quarter, starting off with a pair of goals from Josh Tankersley and Kyle Campbell in the first six minutes to bring the Tigers within one goal. Combs exploded again, scoring two more goals for Maryland. The first came off a rebound from a Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.) near-miss. The second came off a beautiful pass courtesy of freshman attackman Dan LaMonica (Parkton, Md.) from behind the net to Combs, who had the angle from the left corner. Towson fought back for another goal before the horn signalled halftime. This time Brad Monaco found Hunter Lochte for the goal, just seconds after the Terps came back to full strength from a penalty situation. At halftime, the score stood Maryland 5, Towson 3.
Towson came out hard in the second half with some double-team pressure that tripped up the Terps and allowed the Tigers to get within one goal again when Tankersely netted another unassisted goal. Maryland's Craig Hochstadt (Columbia, Md.) ripped a shot from 15 yards, fitting it into the lower right corner of the net passed Towson keeper John Horrigan for the Terps first score of the half. Daue took a pass from Mollot in the center and converted from seven yards out to make it a 7-4 Maryland advantage heading into the final quarter.
Towson threatened the sluggish Terps in the fourth, scoring two to open the action with Monaco and Kyle Campbell hitting to bring the Tigers within one goal again for the third time in the game. Daue drove through traffic right down the middle to score another critical goal for Maryland at the 5:27 mark. Towson's Brad Reppert tried to spark a late Towson comeback, scoring at the 4:20 mark to make the game a tight one again, with the Terps holding on for the final minutes. Mike LaMonica gave the Terps some insurance, netting the day's final goal at the 00:16 mark to make it a 9-7 win for the third-ranked Terps.
"I look up there and we've got nine on the scoreboard, and we should have had 19," said Maryland head coach Dick Edell. "Jamie Daue stepped up and Nate Watkins (Elmire, N.Y.) played his best game in a Maryland uniform. Thank God they did. The positive thing is that you can play this way and maybe learn a lesson, hopefully, and still get a win."
Maryland returns to action next Saturday, as the Terps travel to Newark, Del., to face the Delaware Blue Hens at 7:30 p.m. at Rullo Stadium.
