CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Redshirt sophomore A.J. Herrera (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored his second goal of the weekend, this time the game winner, to give the Terps a 2-1 victory over Liberty at the Virginia Soccer Classic Sunday afternoon. Maryland starts the season out 2-0 for the second year in a row, while Liberty falls to 0-2.

Maryland dominated the entire game, finishing with an 18-5 shot advantage and a 12-2 advantage on corner kicks. Redshirt sophomore Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) opened the day's scoring with a header from six yards out off a Sumed Ibrahim (Tamale, Ghana) cross in the 10th minute. Maryland outshot the Flames in the first half 11-1, generating six shots on goal and keeping Liberty goalkeeper Dean Short busy.

Maryland scored again after stringing several passes together in front of the Liberty net in the 68th minute. Sumed Ibrahim found Robert Sjolund (Borlang, Sweden) on the left side who tapped it to Herrera in the center for the score from less than three yards out. The goal would be the eventual game winner.

Liberty made it interesting, netting a goal with under two minutes to play when Jason Streets found the goal on a scramble to make it 2-1 Maryland. Two other pointblank saves by Terrapin keeper Noah Palmer (Willamsburg, Va.) stifled the Flames' late charge.

For the Terps, redshirt junior Kevin Schmidt (Westfield, N.J.) began the game in goal, playing a scoreless 45 minutes before freshman Palmer took over for the second stanza. Schmidt finished with zero saves and zero goals against, while Palmer had two saves and one goal against. Liberty's Short had eight saves and gave up two Maryland goals in 90 minutes.

The Terps host the Maryland/FILA Classic on Sept. 7-9 at Ludwig Field. The No. 3 Virginia Cavaliers take on American to kick off Friday's action at 5 p.m., while the Terps battle 2000 College Cup finalist Creighton at 7:30 p.m. FILA Classic action continues on Sunday, Sept. 9 when the Cavaliers meet Creighton at noon. Maryland then finishes up tournament action at 2:30 p.m. with the Terrapin women to follow at 7 p.m. against Towson.
