COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 2 Maryland kicked off the 2012 campaign with nine unanswered goals and cruised to a 19-8 win against William & Mary Sunday at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

Junior Katie Schwarzmann led the way for Maryland (1-0) with five goals and also tallied three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Redshirt freshman Brooke Griffin shined in her Terrapin debut with a four-goal showing. Beth Glaros (3), Alex Aust (2), Karri Ellen Johnson (2), Kelly McPartland (2), and Kristy Black (1) also chipped in on the scoring for Maryland.

Despite bitter weather conditions with wind chill temperatures hanging around the 20-degree mark, the Terps attack had little problem catching fire, registering 10 goals in the first 17 minutes of the play. Glaros, Johnson, Schwarzmann and Griffin each paced Maryland in the opening run with two goals apiece.

Maryland picked up its decisive 10-goal cushion with a McPartland score with 10:32 remaining in the first half and never relinquished the running clock.

A total of 10 freshmen saw their first collegiate action Sunday. Rookies McPartland, Megan Douty and Erin Collins combined for eight of the Terps' 19 draw controls on the day.

"I was very pleased with our performance today," head coach Cathy Reese said. "You can't control the weather. We talked about being ready for anything and the girls stepped on the field and had a good time today. We saw some good stuff from everybody and that's always the way you want to start the season as a coach."

Five of William & Mary's eight goals came via free position shots. The Terrapin defense caused seven turnovers and scooped nine ground balls.

Maryland returns to action at 4 p.m. Thursday with a midweek match against Delaware. Admission will be free.
