Top-Ranked Field Hockey Blanks Virginia Commonwealth, 7-0

Oct. 13, 2001

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Nine different Terrapins registered points, highlighted by Carissa Messimer's (Mountaintop, Pa.) two goals and All-American Autumn Welsh's (Macungie, Pa.) single tally and two assists as Maryland field hockey (11-2, 2-1 ACC) downed Virginia Commonwealth (1-13, 0-3 CAA) for its second shutout in as many games. The Terps, ranked No. 1 for the last three weeks in the NFHCA Coaches Poll (No. 4 NCAA), put forth a steady and balanced attack to beat the Rams, 7-0, on the eve of their second match-up this season with No. 3 Old Dominion (No. 3 NCAA).

Two-time All-American Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) put the Terps on the scoreboard with a backhanded wrister at 14:47, and it didn't take long for the Maryland offense to kick in after that. After Messimer was fouled in the circle, Welsh gave the Terps a 2-0 lead with a penalty stroke at 11:02.

The Terrapins came out of the halftime huddle firing, and increased their advantage three minutes into the second period when fourth-year forward Angie Klingerman (Bloomsburg, Pa.) tipped in a long upfield pass from Walter. Two minutes later two-time All-American Rachel Hiskins (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) found Messimer for her first score of the day on a one-timer at 30:59. Messimer's second goal was another tip-in, this time from senior Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) at 20:23.

Two direct corner scores put the icing on the cake for the Terrapins. Redshirt-freshman Sara Silvetti (Wapwallopen, Pa.) rifled in a corner opportunity after a Welsh stick stop and a pushout by senior back Carol Senkler (Hockessin, Del.). Senkler and Welsh fed freshman Emily Boyer (Oak Park, Ill.) for her second collegiate goal at 13:48 to close out the scoring.

Senior Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) and Kerry Hearsey (Leicester, England) spent a majority of the day between the pipes for the Terps, but the Maryland defense kept the Rams at bay for a 33-1 shot advantage. VCU's lone shot in the second half was stopped by Boyer, who closed out the match as a kicking back.

The Terps conclude "PUMA Weekend" at the Artificial Turf Facility on Sunday at 1 p.m. with a match-up against non-conference power Old Dominion. The Terrapins look to avenge a 2-1 loss from Sept. 9 in Norfolk, after splitting two games with the Monarchs last season. Fans will have a chance to win a PUMA jacket and collect Terp autographs after the match.
