COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland softball team beat state-rival Mount St. Mary's Sunday afternoon, 4-2, behind senior Alex Schultz's three hits and sophomore Vangie Galindo's four RBI. The Terrapins are now 8-7 on the year and went 4-1 over the weekend in the Maryland Round Robin.
Junior Kerry Hickey started on the mound for the Terrapins. The Mountaineers loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first inning, but Hickey struck out the last two batters to close the inning and keep the game scoreless.
In the bottom of the sixth, freshman Melissa Mancuso reached on a Mountaineers' error, then stole second. Next up, Galindo hit a home run to deep centerfield to score the Terps' two other runs. She finished 3-for-2 at the plate.
Schultz earned her hits with singles in the first, third and fifth innings. She stole second in the bottom of the first. She leads the Terps at the plate with a .381 average. Sophomore Kathy McLaughlin went 4-for-2 on the day with a single in the first and a double to center in the sixth.
Freshman Lexi Carroll took the mound in the top of the seventh inning. The Mount scored two in the top of the seventh before sophomore pitcher Kendra Knight took over to close the game out and earn the save. Hickey ended the day giving up four hits, two walks and had nine strikeouts.
The Terps will play host to Howard Wednesday at 5 and 7 p.m. Admission for all fans wishing to attend is free. Live stats will be available.
