COLLEGE PARK, MD - Maryland freshman Taylor Twellman (St. Louis, Mo.) scored his 15th goal of the season, and his fifth game-winning goal, at the 25:04 mark to give the Maryland Terrapins a 2-1 victory against the Richmond Spiders.

Maryland completely dominated the first half of play, as the Terps outshot the Spiders, 11-1. Senior midfielder Randy Merkel (Carol Stream, Ill.) put the Terps on the board first at the 18:32 mark as he beat his defender one-on-one, cut left and ran down the right side of the field before converting from 15 yards out and putting the ball into the lower right side of the net. Twellman accepted a Jason Cropley (La Canada, Calif.) pass from the left side of the field, and beat Richmond's Justin Usher, connecting from five yards out into the upper right corner of the net.

Richmond would come out firing in the second half, taking Maryland out of its offensive game. The Terps were forced to play a more defensive-mind style of play, as they would only put one man forward. Richmond was able to capitalize at the 49:38 mark when Andy Moden took a long-field pass from Craig Ziadie and convert from 18 yards out.

Richmond posted five shots to Maryland's four in the second half, and Maryland goalkeeper Christian Lewis recorded his only two saves of the day in the second half. Richmond goalkeeper Adrian Clewlow totaled nine saves in the 90 minutes played.

"We proved today we are one of the top teams in the country," said Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski. "It is pretty special for me to say my team has advanced to the Sweet 16 five consecutive years. However, we will not accept just making it to the first and second rounds. We need to go further."

Maryland next meets Jacksonville, who upset the third-seeded Duke Blue Devils, 3-2, at a time and place to be announced on Monday.
