Terps Show Strong Outdoor Start at UCF Invite

ORLANDO, Fla. - Maryland came out in full force at its outdoor track & field opener at the University of Central Florida Invitational on Saturday. The meet was comprised of athletes from 13 different track & field programs.

The women's team combined for 14 finishes in the top 10. Sophomore Amber Melville led a stellar field performance for the Terps with a first place finish from a jump of 5-11.25. Junior Amina Smith placed third with a jump of 5-08.00.

Thea LaFond continued with the momentum she gained during the indoor season by winning the triple jump with a 41-08.00 distance. Arielle Statham placed seventh in the event (38-08.25). LaFond also finished ninth in the long jump (18-08.00).

The throwers brought the same dominance they showed during the indoor season, led by senior Moriah Young who placed second in the shot put (50-02.00) and fourth in the hammer throw (177-07). Freshman Chioma Onyekwere added to Young's performance with a third-place finish in the shot put (49-10.50) and a ninth-place finish in the discus throw (144-10). Junior Kristiana Person placed fourth in the javelin throw (100-02.)

The women's track events brought success to the Terps, as well. Sophomore Myah Hicks ran a 2:09.96 in the 800-meter run to place fourth in the event.

Junior Becky Yep earned a fourth-place finish of her own, running a 4:44.59 in the 1500. Junior Maryam Fikri followed Yep placing sixth with a time of 4:50.61. Bridget Nolan finished eighth in the 5000-meter run (19.23.21).

The men's team debuted an impressive performance with numerous top finishes, as well. The 200-meter dash brought the Terps three finishes in the top ten. Dareem David led the way with a time of 22.26, earning the senior a fourth-place finish. Sophomore William Sherman finished sixth with a time of 22.55, and senior Shawn David finished 10th with a time of 49.26.

Senior Ryan Chelton ran a 1:56.93 in the 800-meter run to finish fifth. Juniors Brian Faherty (2:04.48) and Sean O'Leary (2:07.28) finished 11th and 12th, respectively.

The men excelled in the 1500-meter run, led by Faherty's sixth-place finish. Senior Joshua Finkle (4:04.28), O'Leary (4:04.97) and sophomore Kikanae Punyua (4:05.78) brought home eighth, ninth and 10th-place finishes for the Terps.

Sophomore Terrence Maliff ran a 56.52 to place fifth in the 400-meter hurdles.

Sophomore Pat Cole led the men's field events with two top-ten finishes. He placed sixth in the discus throw (152-05) and ninth in the hammer throw (160-00).

The Terps' season continues next Saturday as they host the Maryland Invitational in College Park.
