Postgame Quotes: #9 Maryland 76, Brown 36

Head Coach Brenda Frese

Opening Statement:
"I thought it was a slow start. I thought we had to shake out some rust from the break. But I thought the second half was really good. I thought consistently our energy was really good. I liked how we were able to get a lot more aggressive defensively. Our transition game got going from our defense. I thought we were really unselfish with the basketball. I am encouraged, but we have to be able to come out and have stronger starts to be ready for whoever we play tomorrow."

On Brown's fast start:
"They got a few of those in transition when we came out early in our press. We went back to our half court man. I thought they came in with a lot of confidence, and played extremely hard. They are a very good team."

On the strong finish:
"I thought we really locked in. Our defense led to our transition. We started sprinting the floor hard and really made plays. I thought Tianna [Hawkins] and AT [Alyssa Thomas] really did a tremendous job in the second half sparking us with a lot of energy and giving us some easy plays. They need to continue to do that for our team to be successful."

On coming off of the winter break:
"I think anytime you can get home and be around family and friends and get rejuvenated there will be a little bit of rust. You get out of the practice mode because of that stretch. I am encouraged by our second half and what we have going ahead."

On Tianna Hawkins:
"I was joking with her on the bench what a terrible shooting percentage she had tonight. I thought she was sensational. She was really active and flying all around there. She makes really good decisions and takes really good shots in terms of her selection and she was really fun to watch today."

On the tight turnaround:
"My first concern is we have to have a stronger start obviously to begin play. I think we were able to manage minutes today. No one had to play 30 plus minutes and I think as young athletes, in their 20s, they should be able to bounce back pretty quickly. Playing for a championship, the first one of the season, so I expect that we will be fully ready to play.

Junior Forward Tianna Hawkins

On her play:
"Going into the game I had great focus and I think that helped my teammates out with finding them open on the court and getting them good shots in the right positions."

Junior Forward Alyssa Thomas

On the 19-point run:
"It gives us a lot of confidence. That's our type of game - to get stops and push in transition. Once we started getting into the flow, we were able to break them down."
