COLLEGE PARK, Md. - On the strength sophomore Katie O'Donnell's four goals, the second-ranked Maryland field hockey team routed No. 8 Old Dominion, 8-1, in its home opener on Friday afternoon. The eight goals by the Terps are the most scored since the opening game of the 2003 campaign and it is the most goals ever scored by either team in the series, dating back to 1982.

The Terps (3-0), controlled the game for the entire 70 minutes, pressuring Old Dominion (0-3) from the opening whistle. Maryland broke through the ODU defense at the 20-minute mark, as junior Brianna Davies (Annville, Pa./Palmyra) flicked a pass over to classmate Nicole Muracco (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) in front of the net for Muracco to score.

The floodgates opened after that. Junior Ameliet Rischen (Rotterdam, Netherlands/Wolfert van Borselen) scored an unassisted goal at 25:01, then sophomore Katie O'Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) took over. Her first goal came at 27:32 on a penalty corner, with senior captain Susie Rowe (London, England/Colfe's School) claiming the assist.

The Lady Monarchs broke the shut out just under the 31-minute mark, when Katelyn Smither scored after a cluster in front of the Maryland cage. It was the first goal of the season for ODU and the first goal the Terrapins have allowed.

O'Donnell then scored three unanswered tallies. Before the end of the half, she wound around the ODU defense, to the baseline and then back to the front of the net for the quick score.

In the second half, with the score standing at a commanding 4-1 lead, after a timeout in the 56th minute, ODU pulled their goalkeeper and O'Donnell added her third goal of the afternoon. She scored again on the empty netter on a breakaway, with senior Sarah Scholl (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) assisting.

The Lady Monarchs did not help their cause, committing a foul late in the game, which resulted in a penalty shot, which Rowe converted on. Junior Alexis Pappas (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) finished the afternoon scoring Maryland's final goal of the game, knocking in a rebound on a shot.

The Terps dominated statistically, as well, outshotting their opponent, 21-6, and outcornering, 5-3. In the cage, junior Alicia Grater (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) had a pair of saves, while fellow netminder Melissa Vassalotti (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) made her first-career collegiate appearances after redshirting last season as a freshman.

With the win, the Terrapins trail in the series by just one game, 22-21-1. They will get a chance to even the score later this season, when they travel down to Norfolk, Va., on October 17. The last time Maryland scored as many goals was on August 30, defeating New Hampshire, 8-0.

Maryland returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 7, traveling to No. 9 Michigan. It will be the Terps' third-straight top-10 foe in as many games. It will also be the second Big Ten team Maryland faces, having defeated Penn State earlier this week.
