ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The second-ranked Maryland field hockey team dominated ninth-ranked Michigan, 5-1, tying for the most lopsided victory in the series on Sunday afternoon at Ocker Field in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Terrapins have scored 13 goals this weekend, after defeating No. 8 Old Dominion, 8-1, on Friday in College Park. Sophomore All-American Katie O'Donnell scored twice and assisted on another in the win.

"This was a breakout game for our team, both tactically and emotionally," said Maryland head coach Missy Meharg. "Each player brought a vigilant attitude to the competition in a very spirited Ann Arbor."

The Terps were relentless from the start of the game, controlling the tempo and time of possession throughout the game. The offense was on fire with Maryland scoring five times in the period, led by two goals from Katie O'Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon).

It did not take long for the Terrapins, who scored their first goal less than seven minutes into the game. O'Donnell's first tally was after a penalty corner, redirecting a pass from senior captain All-American Susie Rowe (London, England/Colfe's School).

Not too long later, senior Sarah Scholl (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) sent a lead pass into the circle to junior Nicole Muracco (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) on the counter attack, and Murraco finished off with Maryland's second goal at 9:27.

Michigan managed to draw a penalty corner in the 22nd minute, but the Terps thwarted two shots, including one stop by Terp goalkeeper Alicia Grater (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area). After the save, the rebound went wide to Rowe, which started a three-man attack. Running down the right sideline and getting past all the Wolverine defenders, Rowe made a long pass to sophomore Meghan Dean (Marathon, N.Y./Marathon Central). Dean passed it off to O'Donnell, who was standing beside her in front of an open cage.

The Terps led 3-0 with less than five minutes remaining in the half, Michigan had a two-man break of their own but could not capitalize. The Terps responded, however. Finding themselves deep in Michigan's scoring circle, once again, Murraco too back-to-back shots, but were saved. On the second rebound, Dean batted it in the ball for her first goal of the year, giving the Terps a 4-0 lead.

It was not over, however, as the Michigan goalie found herself out of position again, allowing Scholl to score on an empty net, after a quick pass from O'Donnell.

Before the end of the game, Michigan broke up the shutout. The Wolverines got a direct shot off a penalty corner in the 65th minute, with Meredith Way scoring on assists from Heather Wiley and Sarah Wilhite.

Maryland dominated the game, outshooting the Wolverines, 31-5, also drawing nine penalty corners to Michigan's two. Also, 19 Terrapins saw playing time in the contest.

Last year, the Terps defeated Michigan, 4-0, in College Park, setting the record for most lopsided win in the series.
