NORFOLK, Va. - Tight defense and tough goalkeeping was the theme in a match-up between the top two scoring offenses in the nation, as the No. 1 Maryland field hockey squad fell, 2-1, to the No. 2 Old Dominion Monarchs. Maryland keeper Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) made a career-high nine saves in the game as ODU's defense limited the Terps to two shots to hang on for the win. The Terps had taken three out of the past four meetings entering into the hotly contested, well fought match.
The contest was scoreless through the first period. Junior goalie Hohnstine put on a magnificient first half performance, stopping seven Monarch attempts. ODU outshot the Terps in the first by a 9-1 margin.
The second half witnessed some offense from both teams. Old Dominion was the first to crack the scoreboard when forward Marjolijn van der Sommen netted a fast break goal with 30:43 remaining from fellow sophomore Tiffany Snow. Regrouping after a time-out, the Terrapins struck to tie the game, 1-1, at 15:07. A long up-field pass was delivered to Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany), who set up a one-time, backdoor score for junior Megan Kelly (Gaitherburg, Md.). However, the Monarchs answered with a penalty corner goal by senior Marina DiGiacomo less than five minutes later, with assists by junior Adrienne Yoder and van der Sommen to make the score 2-1. ODU hung on for the final.
The Terrapins return home next weekend to host two ranked teams in No. 11 James Madison and ACC rival No. 3 North Carolina.
