AMHERST, Mass. - The Maryland field hockey team closed out its opening weekend in Amherst, Mass., with a 6-0 win over Quinnipiac on Monday afternoon at Garber Field. The Terrapins swept all three games over the Labor Day weekend, outscoring their opponents 21-0 to start the season 3-0.
"The defense made a real strong statement this weekend, allowing just four penalty corners [over three games] and shutting out all three teams," remarked Maryland head coach Missy Meharg about the Terps' defensive performance in Amherst, Mass. "It shows the defense has good communication and organization. We are looking forward to playing Old Dominion."
Maryland (3-0) took care of business early, taking a 4-0 halftime lead. The Bobcats (0-1) were able to hold off the Terps for almost five minutes to open the game, but sophomore Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) broke through for Maryland's first goal.
Redshirt freshman Lauren Foundos (Old Brookville, N.Y.) recorded her first-career goal 15 minutes into the second period, putting Maryland ahead, 5-0. For the second time in three games, Infante tallied twice in a match, weaving through traffic in the 53rd minute to score the unassisted goal.
"Maryland played with a lot of discipline and established its' lead early while they worked on the zone defense," said Meharg. "We had ups and downs throughout the game, but overall, I am very pleased with the intensity they had today."
Maryland peppered Quinnipiac goalkeeper Erin McKay with 24 shots while making 10 saves. The Terps out-cornered the Bobcats, 10-1.
Maryland is back on the road for a highly anticipated matchup at Old Dominion on Sept. 6 before opening a nine-game homestand.
