COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Third-ranked Maryland scored on two penalty corner opportunities in the first half to claim a 2-0 win over cross-town rival No. 19 American on Tuesday night at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Terps improved to 16-2, while the Eagles fell to 13-3.
Maryland took advantage of two of its eight first-half penalty corners, the first coming from junior co-captain Sara Silvetti (Wapwallopen, Pa.) in the 14th minute. The Terps then took a 2-0 lead with a penalty corner goal from freshman Paula Infante (Santiago, Chile) at 28:43. It would be the only two goals Maryland would need for the victory.
The Terps controlled most of the action, but the Eagles were unyielding. Maryland had a 13-0 shot advantage in the first half, but AU fought back to get in the game in the second and was outshot just 8-6 in the period.
One of the American's six shot attempts resulted in a penalty stroke at 39:51. However, redshirt freshman Christina Restivo (Hereford, Md.) denied the Eagles the scoring opportunity and protected the Terps' shutout, the eighth of the season.
Maryland also had a clear advantage on penalty corners. The Terps drew 12 corners while the Eagles had just two.
Restivo and sophomore Tori Cano (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) combined for five saves in the game. American goalkeeper Laura Miller posted 12. Miller entered the game ranked third in the nation with a 0.79 goals against average.
Prior to the start of the game, senior Lauren Pruitt (Ashton, Md.) was recognized during the Senior Day ceremony.
The Terps play one last regular-season match before heading to Charlottesville, Va., for the ACC Tournament. James Madison hosts Maryland on Oct. 31.
