COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman Lindsey Ubrun led the Terrapins to a 6-4 victory as the University of Maryland softball team split a twinbill with the Florida State Seminoles at the Terrapin Softball Complex today. The Terps stand at 32-24 (7-12 ACC) while the Seminoles improve to 37-25 (9-10 ACC).
Ubrun knocked four RBI, three hits and two home runs on the day, her tenth and eleventh home runs this season. Ubrun is now the all-time University of Maryland leader for home runs in a single-season. Six Terrapins also registered hits in the doubleheader, with Jenny Belak notching two RBI.
Crystal Crews (18-10) took the win, with Abbey Welch recording her second of the season in the first matchup, as they combined for nine strikeouts and ten hits. Nelles takes the loss in the second game moving her to 9-9 on the year.
Both teams got on the scoreboard in the first inning with the Seminoles taking the edge, 3-2. Yuruby Alicart's RBI triple brought home lead-off hitter Natasha Jacob, who had singled. Veronica Wootson followed with a squeeze bunt that scored Alicart, while Brittany Osmon's RBI single plated Wootson for a 3-0 lead. Ubrun's two-run home run in the bottom of the inning brought home Abbey Welch, who was hit by a pitch to get on base, keeping the Terps in the game at 3-2.
The teams were scoreless until the fourth inning when the Seminole's Osmon increased the lead to 4-2 after crossing home plate on Jacob's RBI single.
Ubrun answered the call again as the lead-off hitter in the Terps next at-bat, belting a home run to left field. After both Keri Lounge and Whitney Reigel drew walks, Devon Williams hit a single that brought in Lounge for the tying run when the Seminoles committed an error. The Terps filled the bases when Amanda D'Attilio was walked bringing up Belak. With two outs, Belak hit a single to center field that plated Reigel and Williams for the two unearned runs for the 6-4 lead which held.
Florida State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. Senior outfielder Jacob scored on Alicart's RBI double, while Alicart crossed home plate on Wootson's RBI triple. Wootson increased the lead to 3-0 when she was brought home on Melissa Wood's single.
The Terps sole run of the game came in the first inning when Belak scored on Ubrun's single to center field.
Welch was summoned to the mound for the Terps in the third inning. The Seminoles added a run after a wild pitch allowed Wootson, who had singled and advanced to third on a sacrifice fly, to cross home plate.
Maryland had a chance to tie things up the sixth inning with a bases loaded opportunity. Klein and Reigel drew walks while Nikki Smith hit a single. The Seminoles brought in Tiffany McDonald in relief. With one out, Williams reached on a fielder's choice with the second baseman making the play to get Klein out at home. The next Terp batter struck out to close the inning with the Terps still down, 4-1. The Seminoles would hold the score for the win.
The Terrapins play their final regular season game on Sunday, May 7 at 1 p.m. The game also marks Senior Day where seniors Crystal Crews, Rachel Greyson and Nikki Smith will be honored. Admission and parking are free.
