Maryland Defeats Va. Commonwealth, 13-0

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 1 ranked University of Maryland field hockey team established school records for goals in a single game and largest margin of victory with a 13-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth at the Artificial Turf Field here this afternoon. The previous school records for goals in a game and margin of victory came in a 12-0 victory over Towson on Oct. 6, 1980.

Maryland improved to 1-0 with the victory while Virginia Commonwealth fell to 0-1. The Terps are ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll by Sports Illustrated for Women.

The Terps were led by junior Keli Smith, sophomore Caroline Walter, and redshirt freshman Angie Klingerman who scored three goals each. It was the second career hat trick for Walter and the first career three-goal games for Smith and Klingerman. Junior Rachel Hiskins scored a career high two goals while senior Emily Ward and sophomore Carol Senkler scored one goal each.

Senior Zoe Ehrlich and sophomore Jackie Reilly earned the shutout in the goal for Maryland. Ehrlich and Reilly were credited with one save each as the Terps' defense held the Rams to two shots during the game. Rams starter Jennifer Burroughs was credited with 14 saves while Jodi Dodson was credited with four.

The Terps held a 5-0 lead at halftime and put the game away with four goals during a seven-minute stretch midway through the second half.
