COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The Maryland men's soccer team (10-7, 1-4 ACC) mounted a late charge to come within a goal, but eventually fell to the No. 19 Clemson Tigers (12-3-1, 3-3 ACC) by a 3-2 decision tonight at Ludwig Field. Clemson was paced by Mark Lisi, who had two goals on the night.
Despite several good opportunities for the Terps, scoring was idle until the 35th minute when Steven Rhyne put the Tigers on the board with a goal from seven yards out. Clemson entered the half with the one-goal advantage, and widened the gap with a pair of goals by Lisi in the 51st and 63rd minute to head down the homestretch with a 3-0 lead.
Maryland's Abe Thompson (Fairfax Station, Va.) extended his scoring streak to eight games, netting the Terrapins' first goal of the night with 19 minutes remaining. Sophomore striker Reed Rickert (Sewickly, Pa.) continued the Terp run, converting at 83:48 off a Beckett Hollenbach (Havertown, Pa.) pass. The 3-2 decision was as close as Maryland would come to the upset.
Maryland travels to Virginia Friday, November 3, for their final regular season game. The Terps face the Cavs at Klockner Stadium at 7 p.m, while Clemson travels to UNC-Charlotte on Wednesday, Nov. 5 for a 2 p.m. tilt. For both teams, only one game remains before the ACC Tournament on No. 9-12 at Wake Forest.
