COLLEGE PARK, Md.-- - The No. 6 Wake Forest Demon Deacons (10-0-4, 2-0-2 ACC) defeated the No. 7 Maryland Terrapins (12-3, 3-2 ACC) by a 2-1 margin on a Jamal Seale goal at the 99:45 mark.
In an eagerly anticipated match-up of the top-ranked teams, both went scoreless through the first 75 minutes before Bobby Gehring found the net for Wake Forest on a pass from Matt Thompson. The Terrapins took it up a notch to combat the deficit and equalized the goal-count at 84:27 when Siba Mohammed (Tamale, Ghana) crossed it from the right side past Wake Forest keeper Sean Conner. Rob Birch (West Islip, N.Y.) and Jason Sardis (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) were credited with the assist. Mohammed's goal would be what sent the Terps into overtime for just the second time this season, it was the fifth overtime game for the Demon Deacons.
The overtime period was intensely competitive, but it was Wake Forest that found the goal first when Seale came out on top of the one-on-one and deposited the golden goal at 99:45.
Maryland meets Loyola in the next contest, a home game, on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. The Demon Deacons next game is Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
