COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Revenge was on the minds of the Maryland's women's soccer team entering their home opener against No. 13 Penn State Sunday at Ludwig Field.

Nearly 10 months ago, those same Nittany Lions eliminated the Terps from the 2003 NCAA Tournament with a 2-1 victory in College Park.

But an early goal by sophomore striker Tiffany Weimer deflated the Terps and the Lion defense, from keeper Amanda Brown, staved off several good second-half scoring opportunities en route to a 3-0 victory in front of 1,032. The 24th-ranked Terps fall to 2-2, Penn State moves to 3-1.

"I thought Penn State's defense and their goalkeeper played very well," said head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. "But I was pleased with our play and the amount of possession time we had. I feel we really battled this team very hard for much of the game. We had some chances late in the game but couldn't finish them off."

With Penn State up 1-0 for most of the match, Maryland mounted a charge with about eight minutes left in regulation as Katie Ludwig (Mount Laurel, N.J.) fired a point-blank shot that was stopped by Brown which began a flurry. About a minute later Jen Biscoe (Baltimore, Md.) blasted a shot that went high to the right over the PSU net. Then freshman Ashly Kennedy (Edgewater, Md.) had one great chance again point blank with Brown, who came up huge again with a stop.

Following the Terps' opportunities, Penn State capitalized as Heidi Drummond scored a breakaway as Maryland goalkeeper Kristen Barnhill (Charlottesville, Va.) came out the net and Drummond moved by her scoring into an empty goal with 2:38 left in the game.

Then with just six second left Stephanie Smith converted a shot off the crossbar that bounced in off a scramble from the right corner flag with time counting down.

Brown finished with three saves, all of them in the second half. Barnhill also had three stops.

The Terps return to action on Friday night as they host Towson at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field. Listen to the game on wmucsports.com.
