COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Six Terrapins scored as No. 6 Maryland beat UC Davis, 7-0, Sunday afternoon in its annual Breast Cancer Awareness game at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Freshman Sarah Sprink led with two goals as the Terps (11-3) outshot the Aggies, 21-5.
Five minutes later, the Aggies (6-9) earned three straight penalty corners over a minute and a half. One shot was blocked by the Terrapins' defense and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Brooke Cabrera notched saves on the other two corner plays.
Sprink scored her second goal of the day off a penalty corner setup from Gerzabek and senior Harriet Tibble with 15:03 to play. Fifty-three seconds later, Gerzabek scored to make it 4-0 off a hard shot from the middle of the circle. UC Davis called a timeout after the Terps' goals.
With 14:03 to play, redshirt sophomore Shelby Sydnor found freshman Alyssa Parker by the cage for a 5-0 Maryland lead. With just under nine minutes to go, junior Ali McEvoy struck off a corner for a 6-0 Terps advantage. Tibble and senior Janessa Pope notched assists on the play.
With three minutes to play, senior Lindsey Puckett scored Maryland's seventh and final goal off a rebounded shot.
Cabrera notched four saves in the win. The Terps had five penalty corners to the Aggies' three.
Next, the Terps will welcome local opponent Towson to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex for a 7 p.m. matchup Tuesday. Admission is free. GameTracker live stats will be available and the game can be heard live online on Maryland's campus station, wmucsports.wordpress.com.
After Tuesday's game, the Terrapins will welcome No. 2 North Carolina to College Park next Saturday for a rematch of the 2009, 2010, and 2011 NCAA championship games. The two teams have won the last seven national titles, with the Terps winning five, including the last two. Maryland and UNC will play at 1 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
