WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Maryland was unable to end Wake Forest's perfection.

The eighth-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons kept their record peerless, as they moved to 8-0 with a 3-1 victory over the Maryland Terrapins on Friday night at Spry Stadium. The game was the ACC opener for both teams as Wake continued its run as one of one 13 undefeated and untied clubs in Division I women's soccer.

Maryland fell to 4-3 overall with the defeat as Simone Dekker (Ringwood, N.J.) scored the Terps' lone goal.

Wake's junior midfielder Katherine Winstead converted a beautiful crossing pass from Melanie Schneider sent right into the center of the Maryland box to give the Demon Deacons a 2-1 lead in the 58th minute. The goal was Winstead's second of the game and fifth of the season as she put Wake on top 1-0 in the 42nd minute.

The Demon Deacons secured the game as Schneider netted her first career goal in the 67th minute to make it 3-1. Schneider scored from an incredibly sharp angle in the far right corner that bended past Maryland keeper Mariel Wilner (Owings Mills, Md.) into the high left corner.

Dekker scored Maryland's only goal to match Wake Forest's game-opening goal as she scored with six seconds left in the first half to knot the game at 1-1. The freshman forward knocked home a free kick from Audra Poulin (Silver Spring, Md.) to tie the game and give the Terps a boost heading into halftime.

The goal was Maryland's first against Wake Forest in four games, as the Terps had been shutout 1-0 by Wake Forest in the previous three meetings dating back to 1999.

Wake Forest opened the scoring as Winstead converted a thru ball from Alena Thom with 3:53 left in the first half to give the Deacs a 1-0 lead.

Maryland looks to get back on the winning side of the ledger as it hosts local rival George Washington (2-3) this Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Ludwig Field. The game is the second in a doubleheader with the sixth-ranked Maryland men's team taking on Duke at 2 p.m.
