DURHAM, N.C. - The Maryland field hockey team (16-4) just couldn't get it going in the second half and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (16-2) captured the first ACC field hockey title in school history as the Terps fell in the conference championship game, 4-0. The Terrapins had reached the final for the fifth straight season but Sunday belonged to the Deacons.

"I think in the first half Maryland really set the tone, and I'm really proud of the way we came out. We just couldn't get the goals," said Terp head coach Missy Meharg. "I think we really needed to play that way for the full 70 minutes, and I think we made some poor decisions about our individual defense in the second half."

The Terps played well in the opening period but just could not find the goal. Wake Forest was able to withstand one Maryland penalty corner early on and hold the Terps to two shots, while Maryland's defense kept the Deacons off the scoreboard until late in the first half. Wake made the most of its lone corner opportunity when senior Heather Aughinbaugh slid the ball into Kelly Dostal, who slapped it into the left corner of the cage. Wake took a 1-0 lead into the halftime huddle.

Wake attempted to keep its momentum at the start of the second period, and took a 2-0 advantage when Dostal slammed a free hit to Maeke Boreel, who deflected it up and into the right corner of the goal. The Deacs increased their lead to 3-0 on an indirect corner play where Aughinbaugh slid the ball out and received it from Dostal for the sweep. Aughinbaugh capped the scoring with a slapshot in the 63rd minute.

For their weekend-long efforts, Izzy Palmer (Malvern, England) and Colleen Barbieri (Centereach, N.Y.) were named to the 2002 ACC All-Tournament Team.

The Terrapins now head back to College Park to await their NCAA seed and tournament first and second round site when it is announced Tuesday at 8 p.m. on the Internet (www.ncaasports.com). Comcast SportsNet will replay the ACC title game at 11 p.m. on Sunday in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. area.
