BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Maryland softball team ended its stint in the Florida Atlantic Kick-Off Classic with a 2-1 loss to Mississippi Sunday afternoon. The Terps are now 2-3 on the year after their opening weekend.

"We had a good weekend," head coach Laura Watten said. "We played some strong competition and improved each day. We were able to get a gauge of what we need to improve and focus on this week in practice."

The Terrapins struck first in the fourth inning when senior Alex Schultz singled to drive in junior Kerry Hickey. The Rebels didn't score until the bottom of the fifth. After allowing the run with no outs, Hickey, who was on the mound, struck out the next two batters swinging to help close the inning.

The Rebels clinched the win with a series of singles to score in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Sophomore Kendra Knight started on the mound for the Terps and threw five strikeouts in four innings and allowed just two hits. Hickey finished the game and notched four strikeouts in her 2.2 innings.

Sophomore Kathy McLaughlin led the Terrapins at the plate, going 2-for-3. Sophomore Michelle Takeda, Hickey and Schultz also got hits on the day.

Maryland will head south again next weekend to take part in the NFCA's Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. The Terps will take the field Friday, Feb. 26 at 1:30 p.m. to take on No. 9 Alabama to open the weekend.
