COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland Head Coach Laura Watten released the final schedule today for the 2005/2006 Maryland softball season. The Terrapin schedule is comprised of some of the nation's top softball teams as well as the traditional ACC foes of Georgia Tech and Florida State.
The Terps undoubtedly will gain significant playing experience this season with sixteen double-headers and contests against top-five teams including Michigan (national champions), Arizona, and Stanford. In addition, the Terps will face a number of opponents they have never played before including Louisville, Texas Tech, Cal Poly, Fullerton, Western Michigan and Norfolk State.
Maryland starts the season with four invitational tournaments, three of which the Terps have not participated in previously, the Georgia Southern University Tournament (Feb. 17-19), the Palm Springs Invitational (Feb. 23-26) and the Mason-Dixon Classic (Mar. 10-11). Maryland opens its ACC schedule on March 10 in a contest against George Mason in Virginia Beach, VA.
The first game in College Park is against Morgan State on March 22 with other key home contests taking place against Virginia Tech (April 8-9), Virginia (April 15-16) and Florida State (May 6-7)
The 2006 ACC Championships will be held at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill from May 10 - May 15.
Joining Coach Watten in her first year with Maryland are assistant coaches Alissa Smith and Meghan Cornett. Smith comes from Bethune-Cookman, while Cornett joins the Terps from the University of South Carolina in her first year as an assistant coach.
