COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Second-ranked Maryland field hockey fought past regional-foe Temple, 3-1, at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex Sunday afternoon in the Terps' third game of the week. The Terps' record improved to 12-0, tying the program record for the best start to a season set during last year's championship season. The loss brought Temple's five-game winning streak to an end as the Owls fell to 9-4.
Scoreless until the 21st minute of play, sophomore Alexis Pappas (Mount Joy, Pa.) put the Terps on the board with an unassisted goal off a rebound for her first tally of the season. Junior Susie Rowe (London, England) followed eight minutes later with her 10th goal of the season, assisted by sophomore Ameliet Rischen (Rotterdam, Netherlands).
In the 31st minute of play, Temple's Kasey Ruth and Alli Lokey charged Terrapin goalie Kathryn Masson (Richmond, British Columbia) in a 2-on-1 situation. Lokey dribbled straight on towards the goal, dishing the pass to Ruth who knocked the ball into the right corner of the goal to cut Maryland's lead to 2-1.
The score remained 2-1 until nearly 30 minutes into the second half when Maryland sophomore Nicole Muracco (Sewell, N.J.) drove in her 11th goal of the season off of a pass from sophomore Bri Davies (Annville, Pa.) on the baseline. Both Muracco and Rowe top the Terrapin scoring leaders list in the second and third spots, respectively, after freshman Katie O'Donnell's (Blue Bell, Pa.) 12 goals.
The Terps outshot the Owls by an astounding 39-9 margin during the contest, as well as, earning 17 penalty corners to Temple's four. In Maryland's last three wins, different Terrapins have contributed to the offense, as no player has scored multiple goals in those games. Temple goalie Erin Hanshue amassed 18 saves in the loss.
Next up, the Terps will travel to Durham, N.C., to face off against ACC opponent Duke. A win for Maryland will break the school record for consecutive wins to start a season. Today's win also extends a 16-game winning streak for Maryland, dating back to the first round of last year's NCAA Tournament.
