CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 1 Maryland field hockey team (11-1, 1-1 ACC) scored a goal in each of the first, second and overtime periods to hold off a resilient effort by the No. 18 Virginia Cavaliers and come away with a 3-2 OT victory. Sophomore Colleen Barbieri (Centereach, Va.), the 2001 ACC Rookie of the Year, netted her first score of the game with just under seven minutes to play in the overtime session to lift the Terps to their second extra-time win this season and help Maryland to its first conference victory of the year.
The Terrapins took an early lead in the opening minutes as senior All-American Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) scored off a pass on a long corner from Barbieri. The Terps would take a 1-0 lead into the halftime huddle, but it would not last long.
It was a back-and-forth battle for the Terps and Cavaliers throughout the second half. After the Cavaliers knotted the game at one, the Terrapins took another one-goal lead when Izzy Palmer (Malvern, England) scored on a direct corner from Messimer and Kateri Simon (Fallston, Md.).
Virginia's score with less than 10 minutes to play sent the game into overtime, where Palmer connected with Barbieri for the decisive score. Both Terp players, as well as Messimer, finished with a goal and an assist each, and Maryland posted an 11-1 penalty corner advantage as a team.
"It was a typical Maryland-Virginia ACC game, played with a tremendous amount of spirit and energy," said the Terps' four-time national coach of the year Missy Meharg. "I think we could have done better against the man-to-man defense, but I have to give our team credit for being diligent and finishing on our set pieces."
With the victory, the Terps run their win streak to four in a row. They put that streak on the line in their second-straight ACC match-up when the Duke Blue Devils come to College Park on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. Maryland hosts the Davidson Wildcats a day later, also at 1 p.m. at the Artificial Turf Facility.
