COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 1 Maryland field hockey team toppled Big Ten opponent Ohio State, 4-1, in the opening game of the Terrapin Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Maryland's record improved to 5-0, while the Buckeyes fell to 2-4. In the second game of the day, American scored with time expired, to claim a 1-0 victory over Northeastern.
Junior All-American Susie Rowe (London, England/Colfe's School) scored first for the Terps, off of a penalty corner and double assists by Katie O'Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) and Janneke van Leeuwen (Hilversum, Netherlands/Alberdink Thijm College) with less than seven minutes elapsed in the game.
The score remained 1-0 until 24:14 into the first half, when junior Sarah Scholl (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) knocked in her first goal of the season off of a pass by sophomore All-American Nicole Muracco (Seawell, N.J./Washington Township). O'Donnell and van Leeuwen combined again five minutes into the second half to assist junior Ellen Ott's (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkioman Valley) penalty corner goal.
Muracco went on to tally her seventh goal of the season and extend her scoring streak to five-straight games with an unassisted goal off of Ohio State goalie Lindsay Quintiliani's pads at the end of the second half to clinch the victory.
For OSU, Yesenia Luces drove in the Buckeyes' only goal at the end of the first half. Open in front of the cage, Luces swept in the unassisted goal, her fifth of the season.
Maryland outshot Ohio State, 24-3, and the Terps held the Buckeyes to zero shots in the second half while taking 14 of their own. Maryland also outcornered OSU 10-2, and connected on two. In the cage, Quintiliano saved eight shots while allowing four goals for the Buckeyes.
Later in the afternoon, the twelfth-ranked Eagles took on the Northeastern Huskies, defeating the Huskies 1-0 on a penalty corner goal by Savannah Graybill with no time remaining on the clock.
