DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 14 University of Maryland women's soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss at No. 8 Duke Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
The defeat puts the Terrapins overall record at 9-4-4 and 3-4-2 in ACC play. The Blue Devils are now 15-2-1 on the season and 7-1-1 in conference action.
Things got off to a good start in the first half with Maryland opening a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute of play. A Blue Devil foul gave the Terrapins a free kick, but junior Olivia Wagner's shot was blocked. The deflection, however, went to senior Lydia Hastings and the wide back finished the play to record her first goal of the season.
But after halftime the match was all Duke as the Blue Devils scored three times in a span of 15 minutes to open up a 3-1 advantage with 25 minutes left to play.
Senior goalkeeper Yewande Balogun made six saves for Maryland.
The Terrapins finish up their 2011 regular season on Thursday, Oct. 27 when they host No. 7 North Carolina at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field. The match will be the final regular season home game for Maryland's 11 seniors: Skyy Anderson, Sade Ayinde, Mallory Baker, Balogun, Annesia Faulkner, Ashley Grove, Hastings, Kristen McAfee, Ariel Nehemiah, Amy O'Sullivan and Jasmyne Spencer.
