Sept. 16, 2000
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - In a match that featured two of the top defenses and goalkeepers in the nation, the No. 1 Terrapins (6-0) overcame No. 12 UMass, 2-0, before 1,003 at the Artificial Turf Facility on the Maryland campus. Maryland's school record win streak now stands at 28 as Terp junior goalie Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) collected her second shut out of the 2000 season. The Terps pounded Minutewoman keeper Zowie Tucker by a 23-5 shot advantage, with the eighth-rated keeper in the nation making 13 saves in the loss.
The seventh-rated UMass (5-2) defense was able to keep the Terps off the scoreboard in the first half, but three-time All-American Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) ended the stalemate in the second stanza at the 9:13 mark. The Honda Award hopeful ripped a left-handed slapshot past Tucker to give the Terps a 1-0 lead. With 6:22 remaining junior All-American Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) one-timed a pass from senior All-American Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) to put the Terps up by the 2-0 final. Walter has scored at least two points in every game of the Terps' 2000 season and has seven goals in the last three games.
The Maryland defense stepped up to frustrate the Minutewomen's offense throughout the contest. In the first half when Massachusetts mustered a two-shot possession, Maryland goalie Hohnstine thwarted the first attempt with a kick save. Minutewoman forward Stacey Blue fired the rebound toward the cage, but Maryland senior back Lindsay Gorewitz (Rockville, Md.) stepped in for the defensive stop. In the second half, Massachusetts' Patty Robinson was denied by Hohnstine on a penalty stroke opportunity. The Terps' savior lunged to her right to punch the shot wide of the net to help ice the shut out.
Maryland meets unranked Radford (2-5) tomorrow at the Artificial Turf Facility. Game time is 2 p.m.
