COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey team, ranked No. 2 in the latest Kookaburra / NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, beat Rutgers (1-5) 8-1 Sunday afternoon in the last game of the Terrapin Invitational tournament in College Park. Sophomore Megan Frazer led the Terps (5-0) with three goals in the game, while senior Katie O'Donnell also scored twice.

"The fact that they are Preseason All-ACC picks, shows that they are threats," head coach Missy Meharg said of Frazer and O'Donnell. "They're fantastic athletes and they're going to be go-to athletes for us. Both of them play for their team first."

All three of Frazer's goals came in the first half and O'Donnell notched three assists on the day as well. Freshmen Ali McEvoy, Jill Witmer, and Hayley Turner also scored for the Terrapins as well. Frazer's hat trick was the second of her career, the first coming against Penn State in 2009.

McEvoy struck first, scoring in the ninth minute on a penalty corner setup from sophomore Colleen Gulick and O'Donnell. Frazer's first score came four minutes later on a hard shot to the left corner of the cage. Witmer scored just 30 seconds later to give the Terps a 3-0 lead. O'Donnell dished it to Witmer from just in front of the goal on the left side for the score.

A minute and 19 seconds later, Frazer got her second goal as she scored on a penalty corner, as McEvoy got the assist. Frazer closed the half at 5-0 as she scored off of a rebounded shot.

Two minutes into the second half, O'Donnell passed to Witmer, who passed to Turner in front of the goal for the Terps' sixth goal of the day. Less than two minutes later, O'Donnell scored unassisted and then with 20 minutes remaining in the game, O'Donnell scored on a high shot after a pass from sophomore Kirstie Dennig.

Rutgers' Heather Garces scored the Scarlet Knight's goal off of a rebounded shot in the 59th minute.

Redshirt junior Melissa Vassalotti made her third start in goal this year. She had two saves on Rutgers' four shots.

The Terrapins will open ACC competition next weekend, as they host No. 7 Boston College Saturday at 1 p.m.

"We're going to be coming up against some stiff competition," Meharg said. "The ACC is the best league in the country. What I want to see is just vigilant competitive nature in our character."

Maryland and Massachusetts will face off Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in College Park. Gametracker will be available for all of the weekend's games and games will be broadcast live at WMUCSports.com.
