UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Maryland's women's soccer season came to an end on Friday night as the Terps were defeated in a penalty kick shootout, 4-3, in the NCAA First Round. The game ended in a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation and remained tie through two overtime periods.
The game recorded as a tie finishes the Terps record at 11-8-2.
Maryland tied the game at 1-1 in the 63rd minute on senior Katie Ludwig's sixth goal of the season. Ludwig knocked home the goal from 20 yards out into the back left corner of the Rutgers goal.
Rutgers took a 1-0 lead as Carli Lloyd scored in the 26th minute. Meghan Cameron sent a cross from the right side into the box where Lloyd deposited it past Terp keeper Kristen Barnhill.
Maryland controlled the game for the first 20 minutes before Rutgers started to mount an attack. The Scarlet Knights took seven of the final eight shots of the first half beginning with Lloyd's goal.
The game was Maryland's first-ever overtime game in NCAA Tournament history in 14 all-time games.
