College Park, Md. - The Maryland men's soccer team upset No. 21 Loyola on a penalty kick from freshman Abe Thompson (Fairfax Station, Va.) Wednesday night at Ludwig Field. The goal continued a seven-game scoring streak for the striker and marked head coach Sasho Cirovski's 100th victory at the Terps' helm. The 1-0 win was also the fifth straight shutout for the Terps and their starting goalie, senior Christian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.), who had three saves on the evening.
The game was evenly played through most of the first half and early in the second half, until the action started to heat up as the clock wound down. At 72:53, Loyola's Peter Kebis received the Greyhounds' second yellow card of the evening. From there, the last 18 minutes of the game would become a tightly-contested stretch containing five more yellow cards and the penalty kick that led to Maryland's eventual win. In the 77th minute, freshman Bryan Vitagliano (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was streaking through the middle of the box for a shot when he was taken down hard by a Loyola defender. Thompson nailed the ensuing penalty kick, his third penalty conversion of the year, giving the Terps the only goal they would need.
The remaining 13-plus minutes were filled with action and anxiety, but the Terps were able to pull out the win to raise their record to 10-6. The 21st-ranked Greyhounds fall to 11-3-1, and have one more regular season game on Monday, October 30 at 7 p.m. at West Virginia. Maryland hosts No. 19 Clemson on Saturday for the final home game of its season. Gametime is at 7 p.m., and it will be Youth Soccer Night at Ludwig Field. Youth soccer players, coaches, and friends will be admitted for two dollars each. Saturday is also autograph night. After the game, the entire Maryland team will be available for autographs.
