MIAMI, Fla. - The University of Maryland softball team dropped a 4-1 contest to Michigan State in its opening game of the Golden Panthers adidas Tournament. Michigan starter Jessica Beech held the Terrapins to three hits in the defeat.

After going hitless through the first two and one-third innings, senior designated player Casey Leiter (Lake Stevens, Wash.) put the Terps on the board with a solo shot over the left centerfield wall. The home run was Leiter's first since her sophomore year.

The Spartans took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth. After having players reach base on a single and fielder's choice, Michigan State scored two runs on a two-out double to left center by Beech.

Michigan State added another run off third baseman Brittney Green's RBI-single up the middle to bring the score to 3-1 in the top of the seventh. The Terps managed to turn a double play with two runners in scoring position when Beech popped up to center fielder Natalie Grossman (Skillman, N.J.). Grossman caught Green trailing off second after the catch and quickly tossed the ball to second to complete the double play. The Spartans scored another run on a wild pitch by Maryland reliever Liz Gall (Bothell, Wash.)

The loss drops Maryland to 3-3 and Maryland starter Jessica Aditays (Shrewsbury, Mass.) to 1-2 on the season. Michigan State improves to 5-3 and Beech moves up to 4-2. The Terps will take on tournament host Florida International later this afternoon at 6:30 p.m.
