The University of Maryland dropped both games in the Sunshine State Tournament today, falling to Florida State earlier in the day and Western Michigan in the consolation game. The Terps stand at 7-8 as Western Michigan improves to 8-5.

Game One

The Terps could not hold on to an early lead today in the game against the Seminoles, falling 5-4 in the third game of the Sunshine State Tournament.

The Terps out-hit the Seminoles 9-to-7 in the game, with two doubles coming from Nikki Smith and Abbey Welch. Crystal Crews pitched 6.0 innings for the Terps with four strikeouts. Meredith Nelles takes the loss for the Terps.

In the second inning, with Lindsey Ubrun on second base and Whitney Riegel on first base, Jenny Belak advanced to first base on a fielder's choice. With a 0-2 count, Lindsay Klein hit a single and advanced on a Seminole error which scored Keri Lounge and Belak for a 4-0 lead at the end of the inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Seminoles got on the scoreboard with two runs when Natasha Jacob's triple scored Yuruby Alicart and Whitney Buckmon.

Rachel Greyson added another run in the third inning on Keri Lounge's single up the middle for a 5-2 score. Lounge was 3-for-4 in the day.

The game was scoreless for the next three and a half innings. The Terps filled the bases in the fourth on a single, an error and a walk, but could not advance. Maryland had another opportunity in the sixth inning getting the bases loaded on Smith's double and two players hit by pitches, yet Seminole pitcher Tiffany McDonald struck out the next Maryland batter for a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

With the Seminole's at the top of their lineup, FSU's next three batters hit singles to load the bases. Veronica Wootson hit a single on a Maryland error and Hoffer got to second with a single to left. FSU's Carly Brieski hit a short bunt up the third base line, coupled with a Maryland error, scoring the final three runs for the 6-5 loss for the Terps.

Game Two

In the consolation game between Western Michigan and Maryland, the Broncos outlasted the Terrapins scoring the game-winning run in the seventh inning for a 4-3 win over the Terrapins. Maryland falls to 7-8 while the Broncos improve to 8-5.

Western Michigan's Tricia VanDerSlik doubled Lauren Fuller home for the first run of the game in the second inning. The Terps evened the score when Devon Williams' single up the middle prompted an error by Florida State, scoring Meghan Booth for a 1-1 tie.

The Terps and the Broncos remained tied through the middle of the fifth inning. Bronco Katie Niemi's double to right field brought home VanDerSlik and Mandi Sayres to pull ahead, 3-1.

Lounge's two-run home run over the left field fence in the sixth inning tied the game for the Terps at 3-3 but was not enough for the win. At the top of the seventh, Abbey Welch walked the batter to bring home Sayres to pull ahead, 4-3, for a final score and a loss for the Terrapins.
